The Canberra & District Historical Society is an incorporated non-profit organisation in the ACT. Our ABN is 27 465 970 277. We are also a registered charity and all donations of $2 or more are tax deductible. We are entirely a volunteer organisation managed by an elected Council.
We are one of the oldest existing community organisations in Canberra - formed at a public meeting in the senior common room of the Canberra University College on 10 December 1953.
The Society exists to bring the history of Canberra and its surrounding region to you and to encourage collecting, researching, preserving, promoting and publishing its history.
The Society provides a wide range of services and activities for members and the general public including access to an extensive collection, publications, research advice and regular talks. We also have a range of items for sale including local history books, photographs, back copies of our journal and newsletter.
The CDHS collection is held in the CDHS Resource Centre at Curtin. The collection covers the ACT and areas with past and current links to Canberra such as Queanbeyan, Yass, Goulburn, Bungendore and Braidwood. Some of the material we hold is rare or unique, such as collections of personal papers and large maps, and is not available online.
CDHS represents the ACT's historical societies on the Federation of Australian Historical Societies.
The society also hosts a popular Facebook page: Canberra & District History. www.facebook.com/groups/829568883839247/
