Mary Southwell was born on 11 March 1853, daughter of John and Lucy (nee Gasson) Southwell. Married William Mitchell, son of William and Ann (nee Flint), at Parkwood Church on 16 September 1874. Lived at Yarralumla and then 'Homebush' Hall. Mary and William are buried in the Methodist portion of Hall Cemetery. Had seven children: Edith, Jane, Flora Louisa, Lavinia Maud, Beatrice Olive, Archibald Douglas and Winnifred Clare. Mary died on 24 November 1936.
