Laverty served as a signalman in Mesopotamia during the First World War. He worked in Canberra as a clerk with the Department of Home Affairs before enlisting. Note that the inscription on the back refers to Laverty as Russell and Russell as Laverty. Refer to photograph 2534 which shows Laverty and the Canberra soccer team of 1914.
