William Farrer died on 16 April 1906 and was buried on Lambrigg hill. The Commonwealth erected a national memorial to him at the gravesite, which was dedicated on 16 January 1939. A ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of his death was organized by the Canberra & District Historical Society in 1956.
