John Gale is regarded as the Father of Canberra becauseof his advocacy of the site for the national capital. He founded the Golden Age (later Queanbeyan Age) newspaper in 1860 and often reported on his trips around the district such as his 'Six Days on the Mountains of Cowley'. In 1927 he published 'Canberra: History and Legends'. He died in 1929.
