Val Jeffery
"Testing times: Tharwa at the Crossroads": Val Jeffery is a well-known local identity, the unofficial ‘mayor’ of Tharwa, and a man with an intricate knowledge of bushfires in the Canberra region. He is Captain of the Southern ACT Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade, has served as Chair of the ACT Bush Fire Council (for thirteen years) and his contribution to bush fire management over many decades was recognised with the award of the Australian Fire Service Medal. As the local storekeeper he has been closely involved with the Tharwa community, leading the fight to retain the historic Tharwa Bridge (again) and to retain the historic and cultural values of the village. The people of the Tharwa district have not only lost their bridge (at least temporarily) but also their school, have endured more than six years of drought, suffered the 2003 bushfires and face the possibility of the flooding of the Naas valley for the Tennent Dam. These are indeed testing times for the rural community of Tharwa."

Susan is a well-known local historian who has written several books on the ACT and Queanbeyan. She is working on a doctoral thesis on “Building Communities: Women in the Making of Canberra 1911-1958”. While working on this project she came across Ruth Lane-Poole’s designs and sketches for the furniture in the official Canberra residences of the Governor-General and the Prime Minister. How did a woman in the 1920s acquire such skills? Join us as Susan traces the life of Lane-Poole back to William Morris, the Garden City Movement, and eventually to Ireland, the National Gallery in Dublin and to Sligo, a town which also produced some gifted cabinet-makers as wells as the Yeats family, Ruth Lane-Poole’s talented cousins."

 |
|
meeting
7pm Tuesday 10 July :

|
Amanda Day
"'Public Worth and Private Virtue in William Bradley’s Quest for Respectability in Colonial NSW, 1800-1868'.
Amanda's thesis is study of the man and the entrepreneur who was William Bradley. It is the first in-depth and specific historical evaluation of William Bradley. By examining the life and career of William Bradley, a pastoralist, politician, financier, capitalist and paternalist, a reconstruction of a life and career obscured from historical inquiry can be illuminated. Bradley constructed his interests so that they were all economically viable and he could control them from afar. Bradley became a respected colonist who had a major influence on the development of agriculture in Goulburn and on the Monaro.
